Stories, reflections, appreciations, and cynical takes on the world, the country, the past, present, and possible future through a skewed inside-outside lens
Kudos to you Alexis. You have always been a deep thinker, and with your many travels, and decades of international experience in the Foreign Service, you can now continue to cover a lot of ground with your writing. We look forward to following along.
My concern is with the prodigious output you have proposed--a post per week will get right in the way of any month-long travels to visit friends and family abroad, not to mention the ten day backpacking trips in the mountains we should all do to "recreate" ourselves.
And you’re right about the break. I remember wanting to write something I might call the tyranny of constant connection. I was amazed that TR as president could take months away from the White House and hang out in Yosemite and elsewhere with the likes of John Muir. That time of deep disconnection helped seed the idea for some of our greatest national parks. What would have happened had he been “chained to his desk” instead? God (assuming such a concept exists) only knows.
Thanks Ian. I’m just getting a few things off my chest before I go. I appreciate your paying me the compliment of your occasional attention. As for prodigious production, not so much. It’s pretty paltry really, particularly in comparative context. I’m trying to hold back, to keep things short and readable, to avoid flooding the zone with more shit. Enough of that going around. For many years I thought my best contribution would be to remain silent. I will revert back to the mean soon enough. Thanks again for weighing in.
